Your First Visit

Brief Paperwork

Upon entering our office, we ask that you complete paperwork that will provides us with general information about yourself and your condition.

Consultation

Once the paperwork has been completed, you will have a consultation with the doctor to discuss your health-related issues.

History and Examination

In order to properly evaluate and completely understand your actual condition or injury, Dr. VanderSchaaf will ask various questions related to your condition or injury.  Next, an examination will be performed to properly evaluate your condition or injury.

X-rays

Your condition or injury may require x-rays to properly evaluate and to rule out more serious conditions that may be present.  X-rays also assist in understanding the extent of your condition or injury and also assist in developing the most effective treatment plan for your particular situation.  If x-rays are medically necessary, the need for those films are explained and questions are answered before they are performed.  X-rays are not necessary in every case, but if they are, our office is equipped with the most updated state of the art x-ray equipment available.

Same Day Treatment

Once the consultation and examination are completed, treatment will be provided.  That may include spinal manipulation that is explained in detail before the adjustment is performed and/or various physiotherapeutic modalities may be used such as electric muscle stimulation, hot/cold packs, ultrasound, diathermy, interferential current, intersegmental traction, treatment on our hydro-wayterbed and/or acupuncture.  Those of you who may be afraid of needles or be afraid of the idea of acupuncture, it is discussed in detail and if the patient wishes some other type of treatment, we simply move in that direction.

Home Instructions

Prior to leaving, patients will be given instructions on certain activities to avoid and/or certain procedures they can do at home to enhance our treatment in the office. That may include hot or cold applications, the avoidance of certain activities and/or positions as well as various home exercises and/or stretches that can be performed.
